BudgetEase

Frequently Asked Questions

How BudgetEase keeps your money, and where it keeps it.

What is BudgetEase?

BudgetEase is an offline app for keeping track of your own money. You record what you earn and spend, group it into budgets, keep notes, and see reports of where it went. If you sell things, you can also turn on a separate book for your shop.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No. There is no sign-up, no login, and no server. BudgetEase works completely offline and everything you record stays on your phone.

Where is my data stored?

In a database on this device only. Your budgets, transactions, notes and sales are never uploaded anywhere. BudgetEase does report crashes so problems can get fixed, and it may show ads — but neither of those carries the budgets, transactions or notes you enter.

Is my data backed up?

No. There is no automatic backup and no cloud copy. If you want a copy you can keep, use the Excel export from the report screens — it saves a file you can move off the phone.

What happens if I uninstall the app?

Everything goes with it. Because your records live only on this device, uninstalling removes them permanently and they cannot be recovered afterwards. Export first if you want to keep anything.

What is a budget?

A budget is a container for transactions — you might keep one for home and another for work. Every transaction belongs to exactly one budget, and the Expenses tab, Home and the reports all show the budget you currently have selected.

How do I switch between budgets?

Tap the budget name at the top of the Expenses screen. That opens your list of budgets; tapping one selects it and takes you straight back.

I deleted a budget and its transactions disappeared. Are they gone?

Not yet. Deleting a budget hides its transactions along with it, and restoring the budget from More -> Recently Deleted brings them all back. They are only lost if you delete the budget permanently from there, which the app warns you about first.

I deleted something by mistake. Can I get it back?

Yes. Go to More -> Recently Deleted. Everything you delete — transactions, budgets, notes, and sales records — waits there and can be restored. Items are removed for good after 30 days, or sooner if you choose to delete them permanently yourself.

Why is the big number different from my income minus my spending?

Because money can move without being earned or spent. If you earned 1,000, spent 300, lent 200 and put 300 into savings, you are holding 200 — not 700. The app leads with what you actually have, and shows the month's money in and money out just beneath it.

What are the loan and savings options for?

They record money that moves without being income or an expense: money you borrowed, paid back, lent to someone, or got back, and money you put into or took out of savings. When you pick one, the form tells you in plain words what it will do to your money.

Why do savings and loans show all-time totals when I'm looking at one month?

Because a debt does not stop existing because you are looking at March. What you owe, what you are owed and what you have saved are running totals, so the report shows them as such — with that month's activity listed underneath, so you can see which figures moved and which did not.

Where does the Excel file go when I export?

Into your Downloads folder, in a folder called BudgetEase. The file is named after the budget and the period it covers, so exports from different budgets or different months do not overwrite each other.

Can I change my currency later?

Yes, from More -> Primary Currency. There is one currency for the whole app, and changing it does not alter any amount you have already recorded — it only changes the symbol shown beside them.

What does the PIN actually protect?

It stops someone picking up your phone and reading your records. The app asks for it again once it has been in the background for more than about half a minute, so handing your phone to someone does not leave your ledger open. It is a lock on the app, not encryption of the data — someone with technical access to the phone's storage could still reach the file.

What if I forget my PIN?

There is no way to reset it and no recovery code, because there is no account behind it — nothing about you is stored anywhere we could check against. The only way back into the app is to reinstall it, which erases everything you have recorded. Please choose a PIN you will remember.

What is Sales & Profit?

It is for people who buy and sell things. Turning it on in More adds a Sales tab where you keep a list of what you sell, record stock as you buy it, and record each sale at the price you actually settled on. Turning it back off hides the tab and changes nothing else.

Why doesn't a sale change my budget or my Remaining?

Because your shop's money and your own money are two different books, and mixing them would make both wrong. Recording a sale does not touch your budgets, your reports or your Home screen, and buying stock is not counted as a personal expense. If you want some of it in a budget — paying yourself, for instance — record that separately as a transaction.

How does the app know what an item cost me?

From the stock you record. If you buy 10 for 400 and later 10 more for 300, the app works out that you have paid 700 for 20 pieces and costs your sales at 35 each. The sale screen shows you the figure it is using while you type. Sales you have already saved keep the cost they were sold at, so buying a cheaper batch never changes last month's profit.

Why can't I type in an item's cost?

Because it is worked out from what you have actually paid, and anything typed in would be overwritten the next time you recorded stock. To change what an item costs, record a stock purchase — that is the only thing that moves it.

Why does one of my items show all profit and no cost?

Because no stock has been recorded for it, so as far as the app knows it cost you nothing and the whole sale counts as profit. The sales report points out how many sales this affects and how much money is involved. Record what you paid for that item and the profit will drop to the true figure.
